The parotid is the salivary gland in front of the ear, and the nerve that moves the face runs through it. Most parotid lumps are not cancer, but each needs the right tests and careful surgery.

- AssessmentUltrasound and a fine-needle test (FNAC) show what the lump is. MRI is added when the lump is deep or large.
- TreatmentParotidectomy removes the lump with a margin of normal gland. The facial nerve is found and protected throughout the operation.
- RecoveryUsually a short hospital stay. Temporary weakness of part of the face can occur and usually recovers; the team explains this before surgery.

Are parotid lumps cancer?
Most are not. The commonest parotid lump is a benign tumour, but tests are still needed because some are cancers.
Why remove a benign parotid lump?
Benign parotid tumours tend to keep growing slowly and can rarely change over years, so removal is usually advised.
Will surgery affect my face?
The facial nerve runs through the gland. The surgeon protects it throughout; temporary weakness can occur and usually recovers.
When is a parotid lump urgent?
A lump with pain, fast growth or weakness of the face should be checked soon.
