Assessment
Thyroid blood tests, an ultrasound of the neck and a fine-needle test (FNAC). A CT scan is added for large swellings.
Treatment
Many nodules need only monitoring or medicines. Surgery removes half (hemithyroidectomy) or all of the thyroid (total thyroidectomy) for suspicious nodules, cancer or large goitres, with care to protect the voice nerves and the parathyroid glands.
Recovery
Usually a short hospital stay with voice and calcium checks. After total thyroidectomy, a daily thyroid hormone tablet is needed for life.

Are most thyroid nodules cancer? (थायरॉइड की गांठ)

No. Most thyroid nodules are benign. Ultrasound and a fine-needle test (FNAC) show which need further treatment.

Do I need surgery for a thyroid nodule?

Only some nodules: those that are suspicious or cancerous on FNAC, very large, growing, or causing pressure symptoms.

Will I need tablets after thyroid surgery?

After removal of the whole thyroid, yes: a daily thyroid hormone tablet for life. After removal of half, many people do not need tablets; blood tests decide.

Can thyroid surgery affect the voice?

There is a small risk because the voice nerves run close to the thyroid. The surgical team takes specific care to protect them and checks the voice after surgery.
